1. Start a bedtime routine
Following a consistent bedtime routine will help your child’s body to recognize that it’s time to go to sleep. At this point, the body will start to produce melatonin, which is a sleep regulation hormone.
Make it simple enough for your child to follow through even when you’re not there – like brushing their teeth, wearing pajamas and putting away their toys.

2. Go dark
The ‘Terrible Twos’ is a quite curious age for children, and your child is likely going to want to get into everything. This fear of missing out may make it very hard for you to get them to sleep at night and cause a lot of tantrums.
To counter this, make sure that you turn off all devices and all the non-essential lights at least one hour before bedtime. This will give your child’s body time to wind down and be more open to sleeping.

If your 2-year old is a fidgety sleeper or is scared of the dark, it may take them a long time to fall asleep and increase the likelihood of a tantrum. It helps if you spend a few minutes just cuddling with your child at bedtime. This will make your child feel safe and sleep much faster.
You can also use this time to read them a story quietly. As you hold your child close, be sure to take deep breaths. Your child will subconsciously start mimicking your breathing pattern and will soon fall asleep.
5. Give your child a bath
Nighttime baths are a great way to relax the body and signal that it’s time to sleep. Bonus: you also get to clean away all the dirt and mess of your 2-year old’s day. They’ll be feeling too good to be upset at having to sleep again.
